Preface

At first glance nuts and bolts may appear to be simple devices. It is true that they are not complex mechanisms. If you consider the jobs they are required to do, however, they are very sophisticated devices, especially when you realize that a single 1/4-inch, SAE Grade 8 bolt and nut can hold up a full-size car (if the fixture through which the bolt passes also can support the required load). A 1/4-20 UNC 3A, SAE Grade 8 bolt has a tensile stress area of 0.0318 square inch with a proof load capacity of 120,000 pounds per square inch. This gives the bolt an axial load capacity of 3,816 pounds, the approximate weight of a car.
