Here is one I have not had to deal with before and I could use a bit of help...

A customer has requested a support bracket for the purpose of supporting overhead cable. We have two sizes of material in stock for manufacturing these brackets. The sizes are 0.375" x 1.500" A36 hot-rolled steel bar and 0.250" x 2.000" A36 hot-rolled steel bar. The bracket will be formed from a single piece of bar and will have two vertical legs of equal length and a horizontal section roughly equal to the length of the legs. As per Ryerson's Stock List terminology, the bar will be bent the "easy" way as opposed to the "hard" way at a radius equal to the material thickness.

Now for the question...

I am sure it is a no-brainer for most of you to figure, but I have not experienced this before. How do you determine which of these two materials will support more weight?

A quick way to compare the loading performance of each section is to open this calculator: /calculators/section_square_case_6.htm and calculate the moment of inertia.

Then open this calculator /beam_bending/beam_bending2.htm and using the deflection calculator determine which shape deflects the least. Remember that the calculator uses the section modulus (I/dist to neutral axis) instead of moment of inertia.

Crude, however should help you to understand the effects of cross section and loading performance. In general, the higher the moment of inertia, the lower the deflection and higher load carrying capability of the identical material.

If this is going to be used in a critical life or proporety saving application - get an analysis done by somebody very qualified...

Thanks, Kelly. These brackets are for supporting cable over some server cabinets. No heavy loads, but the boss wants to utilize material we have in stock rather than buy new material. I was just trying to figure out which would work better.
