I am a 2nd year ME student so I don't have a lot of practical experience. I am working on creating a mechanical tool for my employer right now and I need some help. Basically the tool has 2 jaws (similar to a clamp) - one will stay still and the other will move linearly back and forth (with the help of an electric motor). However, the jaw that moves has to be adjustable to move different distances. I was planning to use a crankshaft/connecting rod set-up (similar to an engine) to move the jaw back and forth. But this will only provide one constant distance that the jaw will move. Can anybody help me figure out a way to have the jaw movement be adjustable? Maybe an adjustable connecting rod or something? Or any other ideas...

Any help would be great...if anything I said is understandable

You can do it with the slider crank by allowing the crankpin to move into various positions along a radial slot, thus changing the crank radius, but the range would not be great, and/or varying the connecting rod length, similarly.

What sizes and forces are required?

The force is very little - probably less than a couple pounds. The lengths that the jaws would need to compress are about 1/2" and then that would need to be adjusted to about 1/4"
