any ideas on who to contact or how to calculate the force required using a water jet as a bowthruster?

the traditional method is to install a motorized propeller in a tube in the bow, but I don't like that.

Specifically a 4hp electric motor with a 4" or so prop is sufficient. How can I replace that with a high speed water jet? what size orifice and what pressure of the water jet?

It is not about size of nozzle or pressure.. it is about pounds of water moved in what time, (equal and opposite reaction). This figured against the weight of the boat or bow area and the resistance to move through water (sideways) compounded by the cross current you want to be able to fight. I'd almost figure on using what ever amount of water I could afford to draw in from the keel and thrust at either starboard or port bow. .... that is where you are going to be when you are done... you may need all you can afford in an emergency situation. ... that is your REAL answer.

If a 4 HP motor did it before, than 4 HP will do it again, add a HP for flow through your pipe system... making it 5 HP for good measure. A 4 HP pump is going to do 4 HP worth of water moving work... a 4 HP motor driven prop is going to do 4 HP worth of water moving work.

You can do a text book worth of calculations if you wish, but when you are done this is still where you will be.
