I am a mechanical engineer, and used to work in manufacturing facilities. I haven't worked as an engineer in the last few years and I'm a little rusty and can't find my reference books in all the clutter in the basement. So I hope you don't mind if I ask a fairly simple materials question. I now have a stained glass shop. A customer brought a panel for me to repair. It is a lead and glass panel with a zinc border soldered on. Loops had been soldered to the two top, outer corners to hang the panel. The man said that it had been hanging for 22 years. The zinc had stretched and there were spaces showing between the glass and the lead of the border. A fellow stained glass shop owner insists that zinc doesn't stretch. Could someone give me the equations and properties I need to calculate how much zinc stretches over time? Rebecca |

You are reffering to "Creep". See /material_science/creep.htm. You are going to need a creep rate chart on Zinc. |
