I am working on a pressure-vessel device for which I need to calculate a diametral deformation value vs. some load x placed radially all around the vessel.

Imagine a spherical water balloon (that is a good approximation of both the material and geometry I am dealing with). Now let's say this water balloon was placed inside a hollow, cylindrical, compliant tube with the same diameter. Then, I decreased the diameter of the tube (think chinese finger trap being pulled). The balloon would deform "outwards", or longitudinally (parallel to the axis of the tube) as a function of how much inward, radial force I exerted on the tube.

Does anyone know what kind of equation I would need to solve for the diametral deflection? I assume it would be a function of force, material stiffness (modulus?), and internal pressure.

Your discription leads me to think you might might be discribing "Externial Pressure". If so, their are ASME formulas that deal with this. Some refere to this force as Vacuum, at any rate it applies a force around the circumference of the bbl.

1. What is a "bbl"?
2. Where might I find the ASME formulas you mentioned?

A bbl. is short for "Barrel" meaning the shell plates that form the tank.
