If ... you are looking for a short cut, ... forget it!

I'd start first at your local junior college or university. Seek out mechanics classes. Expect to take coarses in basic math and science with some computer science mixed in.

Tuning a modern "hi-tech" engine is a science with plenty of physics and math involved in understanding the process. You tune these engines by altering computer programs. So some kind of study in programming is a must to get the concept down.

We can only study things that happen faster than we can see using physics, math, and computers (perhaps high speed photography).

Then, or during this process, seek out a job in a shop that actually has the ability to work on and finely tune such engines. While there seek to attend any industry provided special schools. Do this until you reach your goal, and strive to be the best there is before you are satisfied. Then, if you have the talent to apply the skills you have learned, you will be a product that is in demand and have a secure future, ... if you stay up to date!

The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.
