Hi! i am a final year mechanical engineering student currently doing my BE project. The project is to find solutions to the problem of fraying of wire ropes(32 mm) that are used to carry liron ore(in tonnes) by using a Grab Barge Unloader(GBU).On going through the matter we have realised that the fraying is due to the friction created when 2 wire ropes rub against each other during normal operation of the GBU.Also due to design problems of the GBU the rubbing of the wire ropes against each other cannot be prevented. Can anyone suggest me possible solutions so that the fraying of the wire ropes be lessened.

Maybe an idler sheave between the two wires at their closest point would work. Naturally, the wires have to be parallel for this to be effective.
