im looking for a suitable water soluble or biodegradable material which once set as a hard substance, is then able to be easily and quickly removed. Ive considered icing sugar and meringue, any other suggestions?

Thanks

Two come immediately to mind. Gelatin and plaster of paris (the latter would require either soaking or a pressure washer for removal). Grain cereals of several sorts might also serve, since they are commonly used in crafting (flour paste, oatmeal, cream of wheat, corn grits, etc)

"hard" covers a lot of territory. Some further indication of the application or it's requirements would help in replying.

Thanks very much for the suggestions. The application is for the support structure in a rapid prototyping process, where i am investigating the potential use of cheaper or more readily available materials than those which are currently used in commercial RP production. I had considered icing sugar and/or meringue (protein and sugar), but the more possible solutions i consider, the better the chance of finding a suitable material.
