It's possible to do this, but if it's not done carefully, disaster can certainly strike. A few things to consider:

1. Without a pretty good sized W10 (W10x30 or better), your deflections will be excessive (over 1.5"). In fact, a W10x30 that long will deflect about 7/8" just under its own weight! I'd suggest going with a W14 for deflection.

2. It's very important to stop the beam from rolling over under load. You'll need to brace the beam at regular intervals and at the ends. When I say bracing, I mean something that VERY firmly holds the beam from rolling sideways. If you're going with the W10x30, I would brace it at the ends and 1/3 points at a minimum (every 9'), more often if you can.

3. Don't forget to spray paint the load rating on it.

4. I'd get a winch that is not as strong as the beam. I'd prefer the winch to fail before bringing structure down on my head.

Back from shopping, found a W10X54 for .25 cents a lb (new in salvage yard)
would this work for me?
I have a lack of head room in the shop, a 10" beam will fit ok.
The span is 27' suported at ends only.
will have gusets in from both ends aprox. 2' to 3' with a 4400# air hoist running on a trolley on the bottom flange.
It may not ever have to lift it's full capacity but I know what if.

Thank you so much for the info. heading out to purchase the tinker toys and wish me luck! Also what is the deflection on a w-10 x 54# both loaded and not loaded? Thanks and does this question make sense? If not let me know.
