Hi from a newbie,

I want to calculate stress in a top hat shaped body accurately for the following set up. I have attached a quick layout drawing. The body is clamped between 2 tubes. All steel.

Basically I want max stress in the top hat shaped body as this is subject to alternating pressure and I want to check fatigue.

Should be simple but my books don't cover this setup properly.

Thanks.

Looks like you need to focus on the shear stress in the top hat.

-Find the force applied to your top hat (P)(A).
-Find the shear area. Take your circumfrence dia. A, mulitply it by th thickness of the hat that is being sheared D.
-Now use your stress equation F/A to get your shear stress.

Let me know if you need any more clarification.
