hi,

Is there a conversion from UTS to an 'ultimate shear strength'.

I am designing a stepped hollow shaft that will fail in shear. I know the shear force and the area over which this will be applied. I now need to specify a material that will be strong enough, but don't know how.

regards,
david.

I dont know exactly about all other materials but for all steels Ultimate shear strength is 75% of Ultimate Tensile Strength.

You may find some useful information in ASTM A48, A47, A197 and A220)
