might be a bit of a stupid question, but how do u convert inches of methylated spirit into mm of water? where density of the spirit is 809..

It is simply a direct ratio of the densities. (assume fresh water is 1, or 1000kg/m^3)

1mm water gauge equates to 0.809mm of meths.

i.e 1mm meths is 1.2mm water gauge

hi thanx for the reply, but u ddnt consider the change from inches to mm..so for example if i had 4inches of methylated spirit, do i multiply it by 25.6 (mm in 1 inch) and then multiply that by the ratio between methylate spirit and water? because thats what i did but i'm not sure if thats correct.

Hi , I'm sorry to say it is not so .
For water 1000Kg/m3 we have aprox 10000 mm for 1 atmsphere or 1 BAR
For mercury ,13000 Kg/m3 we have about 760 mm for 1 Bar
So, if the liquid is ligther we need MORE mm to equal the pressure.
In this case the factor is 1/0.860 = 1.1627
So you need 1.1627 mm of meths to equal 1 mm of water
Or 0.860 mm of water to equal 1 mm of meths.
