Greetings...

I have in my mind an image of a device that is a sort of spherical bearing... almost.

Imagine, a spherical, shallow dish... any size, but say, the size of a dinner plate.

Sitting in the center (naturally) is a single bearing, the size of a baseball.

On top of that, is another dish, inverted.

This forms a sort of self centering, bearing, similar to a technique used to isolate buildings from earthquakes.

What is the name of this device? (as I'm sure I'm not the inventor!)

This type of joint is used as the method of applying power to lift and press the ram on press brakes. They are called knuckles. The parts are called the ball and the socket of the knuckle joint. This is not too unlike the ball and socket of the human shoulder and hip joint. Except, the ball is captured by a second socket that is ring shaped and has the rod or stock of the ball passing through the ring. The lower socket is at the bottom of a cylinder shape and the ring socket is bolted to the top of that cylinder. Thus the ball on the end of a stock or rod is trapped. The cylinder usually has a supply of thick grease within the joint as a cushion and lubricant. This is also a bit like a huge steering ball joint.

In a smaller version the plate holding the heavy object may also have several of these joints in it and would be called a swash plate. In the swash plate the height of the different lower sockets would be varied and the swash plate would be caused to tilt. A similar version of this method can be seen in the modern automobile compressors.


Another version has two shallow open cylinders with ball sockets at the ends. A large ball is placed into one and the second socket is placed on top. Heavy loads or objects are supported this way which need to move or tilt. This keeps the heavy object located over the anchored lower socket but allows the heavy object to shift and pivot any direction within the allowable clearances of the joint. Sometimes the jib of a large jib crane is anchored this way, such as on some ships.

Hey Randy...

Hmmm... I don't think that's really it.

Imagine: a dinner plate sitting at the corner of a table. A baseball sitting in the center of the plate, and another dinner plate on top of the baseball, inverted.

Now, copy this arrangement for each corner of the table. Eight plates, with four balls. Set a piece of plywood on top of all of it.

A self centering platform isolated from lateral movement of the table (up to the radius of the dinner plate).

So... this dish/ball/dish arrangement. I sure as heck didn't invent it, right? Must have a name :-)
