This is what I think -
Because a circle that fits in a square/rectangle or most other geometries has lesser area than the section in which it is fit. This reduces the weight and the support strength still will be enough for the frame.

Dear friends i got this tory on net and this has clarified this question :-
somewhere in early phase of bike emegence there was a
bike racing comptetion . one of the manufacturers won
that race twice . third time what he did is he made
frame of aluminium with a very powerfull engine
thinking that being lighter aluminium will do the job
. he did all bending stress calculations and used
suitable size . but during the race bike failed away .
when reason was sought for this it was found that its
not the bending stress but the real mischief is
stiffness and in case of aluminium modular stiffness
was less and eventhough frame was cabale of dealing up
with bending stress of engine +driver , it failed due
to less stiffness .
another point if you will observe closley is that in
bicycles frame is made in tube shape . ofcourse one
reason is aerodynamic property but the prime one is
stiffness . tubular shape is more stiffer than others.

hopefully question and answer both are interesting
