ref: /aluminum_tempers.htm

We have a problem in out plant when an OEM drawing specifies an aluminum alloy in -T4 condition and we can only find the alloy in -T351. The above link says the two tempers are equivalent but my QC inspector won't buy that as any sort of authority. Does anyone know of an industry specification that states -T351 temper is the equivalent of -T4 temper?

Thanks

Here are some standards you can buy to verify Aluminum Temper Designations.

The current temper designation system in use by industry today was adopted by the Aluminum Association and pertains to all forms of wrought and cast aluminum and aluminum alloys except ingot. You can buy a design guide from AEC.org, which has temper designations defined, as well, as alloy specifications.

Other documents:

SAE Standard J99

MIL-H-6088G HEAT TREATMENT OF ALUMINUM ALLOYS (S/S BY SAE-AMS-H-6088)
