Hi, i am new here and have question concerning ASME GD&T.

We are tapping one part with thread M3.5 x 0.6 - 6H for one customer from States. The print specifies tolerance to follow ASME Y14.5. For inspection on quality of thread, we are using  threaded plug gage based on ANSI H28.

The question : Is this the right standard to use for threaded plug gage to check the above internal thread? There is some dispute going on at the moment whether ISO should be used.

Would appreciate if anyone of you there who has similar experience to advise. Thanks in advance.

Regards,Fred

My experience with screw threads is very limited, so I'm not completely sure, but I would think that it's OK to use the ISO 1502 standard for guidance on gaging of screw threads. There is also a standard B1.2 for gaging Unified Inch threads, but you're talking about metric. I know for sure that the ASME Y14.5 does not reference any standard in particular for the gaging of metric threads, so I guess your dispute is legitimate. I await other replies...

Is the drawing refering to a gaging standard, or with respect to where the tolerance of position, orientation or datum reference for the thread is to be applied?  Paragraph 2.9 of the ASME standard specifies the orientation, position, or datum reference applies to the thread derived from the pitch cylinder.  The exception being that Major or Minor Dia may be specified as an alternative.

Thanks for reply.
The dispute is over what standard of threaded plug gage to use when checking GO-NO GO for M3.5 x 0.6-6H. This thread is formed by roll tap in a blind hole follow by zinc plating. As thickness specified at minimum 7 micron, plating house can only controlled such thickness from 7 to 10 micron. When i checked the plated part with ANSI H28, i have no problem to turn in the GO side of gage but part failed quality check when later ISO standard was used. We later use commercial screw and it turns in freely. So, there must be some tolerance differences between an ANSI standard gage and ISO gage standard. Does ASME specify the major, minor and effective diameter of a metric thread like the above?

The part is zinc plated. But issue is not on plating thickness. Question is standard to follow for inspection of thread after plating.
