I am looking for a handbook or "rule of thumb" relating shaft diameter to packing cross section.

For ex:  5" diameter shaft should use 5/8" square packing.

Thanks.

compression gland, stuffing box, packing

Hi,

The packing size depends not only the shaft size but also the pressure against which it is supposed to seal.

You may refer API61(American Petroleum Institute) codes for information.

Manu.
