Metric Washer Standard: DIN, ISO, or ANSI ? Question

We'd like to specify a range of plain metric washers. It appear DIN 125A dominates the market, even here in North America. I'm curious why DIN 125A (ISO 7089) is more popular than ISO 887, even though ISO 887 seems to be more widely applicable to machine screws, bolts and nuts. I'm also curious why DIN 125A appears to dominate in distributor markets in North America even over ANSI B18.22M - or are ANSI B18.22M washers dominant in high-volume industries such as the auto industry ?
