Barb,

 

hot rolled material whether long or flat products are the raw material for cold products.

Cold refering to the cold finishing that takes place after hot rolling or forging.

My understanding of the process, using a hot rolled sheet or bar is pulled thru pressure rolls to bring the surface tension up above hot roll state. Machining hot roll actually soften the metal by removing the surface tension.
