To cut to the chase... any pulley that causes the rope to be pulled farther than the lift is gaining the factor of that distance difference,less friction losses. So, if I pull a rope over a pulley set in a way that I pull 20 feet of rope and move the load 5 feet I have gained 4 to 1. You trade distance for advantage. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.
