Does anyone have any information regarding too good a surface finish on sliding surfaces? For gate valve design a surface finish of better than 6 microinches and flatness of 6 helium light bands is required to achieve a gas tight metal-to-metal seal. However, I have recently been told that too good a finish and flatness will result in increased friction because of electron sharing between the surfaces. Should the lower end of surface finishes be specified as well? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
