Stress/Strain definition

It is often discussed that when you stress a object it
gets strained & the relation is linear in the elastic range!
Is it not the other way round:
you load an object but no stress is induced in the object
till it gets strained
What i mean is you strain the material which induces stress.
Should we not be saying that Strain causes stress to be
induced instead of saying stress induces strain.
Request opinion on this. This is required to clarify the
concept to students
