Bookham To Highlight Expanded High Power Laser Diode Portfolio At Photonics West 2006

San Jose, CA - January 17, 2006 -. Bookham, Inc. (NASDAQ: BKHM), a leading provider of optical components, modules and subsystems, is further extending its high power laser diode portfolio to the industrial and defense markets at Photonics West later this month.

Building on the success of its high power laser diode bars and single emitters, Bookham is unveiling a range of high performance, integrated solutions, such as vertical stacks, linear arrays, and fiber-pigtailed modules. The full product portfolio will be making its US debut at the Bookham stand (number 1727). Highlights include:
. A 2.4kW fast axis collimated 9xx nm vertical stack based on the Bookham 120W high power bars, which enables higher powers while using fewer bars on microchannel coolers. The product facilitates the scaling-up of disk laser power and provides benefits for direct diode applications.
. A range of linear bar array solutions (at 120W, 200W and 300W) for the pumping of Nd:YAG lasers.
. 50W standard 30% fill factor and 50W high brightness 20% fill factor 9xx nm bars with fast axis collimation, which provide tailored brightness solutions for collimation and fiber coupling requirements.
. A 30W maxichip from an 800µm emitting area for high brightness beam shaping or direct coupling into a standard 800µm fiber without additional optics.
. 7W high power single emitter modules for various fiber laser applications.

"We are building on our expertise to deliver high performance products in the formats that our customers need," explained Dr. Steve Turley, Chief Commercial Officer at Bookham. "This capability will enable our customers to achieve more cost effective and higher performance solutions in the rod, disk and fiber laser markets as well as pushing the boundaries for direct diode applications.

"We are also investing further in our global sales organisation to ensure that our customers in North America, Asia and Europe get the dedicated support that they need," he continued.

Dr. Giorgio Anania, Chief Executive Officer of Bookham, will be joining an executive panel to discuss the Bookham strategy and his views on trends and opportunities within the marketplace.

"High power laser diodes will play a major role in the Bookham strategy for 2006 and beyond," said Dr. Anania. "Bookham is committed to providing high power laser diodes to the key industrial and defense markets and, based on the success we have seen in 2005, we see this portfolio as a major growth driver for us in 2006 and beyond."

Bookham is also presenting two papers at associated symposium LASE 2006: High brightness laser diode bars, and 9xx high power pump modules.
