Protective Coatings Overview

Industrial Coating Types
Finishing and Plating Specifications

Protective coatings are specified and applied to parts and assemblies to isolate and prevent materials from reacting with external gasses, liquids or solid elements, which may cause deterioration of the base material. Protective coatings may be applied in many different mediums, such as,  paint, chemical finishes, polymer coatings, corrosion resistant coatings, Fluoropolymer Coatings, Teflon coatings, or managed surface finish processes.

Careful considerations should be extended when selecting the appropriate protective coating. The following are common engineering and design considerations:

  • Operating temperature
  • Pressure requirements
  • Material compatibility
  • Surface roughness
  • Manufacturing costs
  • Durability
  • Industry regulations
