Systems Engineering for Manufacturing System Design

Hi all,

Im looking for some opinions and possibly recommendations to helpful publications.

My question is: When applying systems engineering principles to the design of manufacturing systems (the manufacturing facility as a system), is it advisable to decompose the system into sub-systems with the lowest level sub-system being the individual machinery and equipment within the manufacturing system or to see each production line as the lowest level sub-system?

Any suggestions welcome.
