    gland nut torque spec

    Hello to the group,
I am designing a piece of test equipment. I have a gland on each end, that holds a test specimen that is sealed with an oring in the face. The glands will be tightened firmly against the face of the barrel, basically making it a blind thread. My question is, is there a torque spec for that application, and how do I calculate it. The thread details are, 8.25-12tpi. The glands are 316ss and the barrel is hastelloy C. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Than you in advance.

Not sure you're using the word "Gland" right..

The gland is what the o-ring is captured in or groove, slot or whatever.

The minimum torque - force should be that required to properly compress the o-ring and resist any other forces encountered in the design.

For force vs torque calculations see:

Also, I have found the Parker O-ring Handbook to be a very useful reference for all things regarding O-ring applications.

Thank you for the input. You are correct, I should have said head nut, as j don't have a "gland" in this application. I know I have all of my seal dims correct. My client just needs a torque spec for the head nut, if applicable. I will look at the links you posted. Again thank you for your input.

I have already pressure tested to 4500 and it passed with flying colors, just trying to finalize details to wrap up project.
