I have a 2 car garage, 28ft wide by 25ft deep. It has a rec room above it with 2x8 joists resting on top of the steel beam pictured. As you see in the picture there is a wooden support post in the middle which is annoying when parking a car. I would like to remove the steel beam (don't believe it is large enough without the support) and replace it with 2 lvl beams but I am having trouble finding out what size lvls I need (18inch tall or 24inch tall). I would plan on cutting the joists and using hangers. This beam only supports the floor above, it's one big room above with no vertical supports going to roof trusses. I thank you in advance for any help.
