I think, once I stop automatically looking to the right, that the left may be a bit more noticeable.
To be really honest, my browser directs me straight to new posts, so i didn't really notice. However, when I click to latest post I'm directed to the top of the thread.
Is this a Chrome thing?

You have an option to sort the thread presentation to either Oldest or Newest first.
