Figured this is as good a place as any to ask.
Not being a Engineer i'm kinda ignorant to whats possible at 5000ft.
I havn't worked out all the details so any advice is appreciated
My is idea is to construct a very heavy round base which will be either poured out of concrete or made from steel. There will be a hole in the center where the blow out preventer will sit. Heavy duty cables will be attached to the base and will form a circle around the base. The base will be lowered with these cables and it will be lowered so it sits on the ocean floor surrounding the BOP.

Once the base is in place some type of very durable synthetic fabric which can contain oil will be guided down the cables on some type of ball bearing glides. I figure there there can either a weight at the bottom of the fabric or use some type of pulley system to pull it down to the bottom. Towards the surface this synthetic tube can taper out so oil won't overflow. Pumps can be set up at the surface to pump into nearby tankers. I think Costners oil seperators could be used efficiently here as well.

Obv manufacturing something thats 5000ft long will take some time and expertise.

Does anyone think this is a feasible idea? Please be as critical as possible

Thank you

David

I have to agree with Kelly and also point out that the oil is coming out at around 7,000psi pressure.

Well, I like that you're thinking about it! Conceptually, without the challenges of fluid forces on the structure and gravity it could work.

However, from a practical engineering point of view I suspect one would have a hard time with the forces working on the structure as well as keeping it in place. Consider that the tallest building in the world is only 2,717 ft. See:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_and_structures_in_the_world

I think the at structural engineering and fabrication would take much more time than the time to just drill another couple of intersecting wells, which is what the end solution appears to be.

Structurally speaking a building only needs to deal with wind forces and gravity. Under the ocean your structure would need to deal with the forces imparted by the water (fluid) which is not compressible or as forgiving as a gas (fluid).

So, I think the structure would need to be incredibly strong to do the job.

Also, Kevin Costners machine has been proven to not work that well with the very thick oil that is reaching the shores.

Just my opinion - keep the ideals coming!!

I think that I would have reached out for more resources by now. Bring in NASA...they train underwater. MIT...LSU...all of the technical colleges. Offer them a $50 million dollar contribution to their school for a viable working proven solution.

I wouldn't want to be a BP engineer right now....I worked with them for several weeks over in the UK and they hated us Yanks.

Go Figure!! They laughed at my Adjustable Wrench...they told me it was for girls.

Marky,

They laughed because you called it a wrench. Remember, they use the term, "spanner."

Ya!! That's right Ron... I remember one guy saying "Bloody Ell...What Is This?"

Then they gave me grief because I didn't use a union plumber to change some fitting on a laser.
