I was reading somewhere that 11 1/4" is standard LVL size. However I called a few lumber and non of them suggested 11 1/4" LVL and said that they don't stock them. Does anybody know why it is not commonly stocked? Also how to find 11 1/4" LVL? Thanks |

OK, I'll be the one... what is LVL? The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

All LVL's I've seen close to that measure come in standard 11 7/8" depth. This coincides with the depth of common manufactured I-Joist. That depth was born out of pure efficiency and maximizing the entire panel of 4'x8' OSB used to form the web; throw in top and bottom flange and they came up with 11 7/8" overall depth. If 11 1/4" is the true depth you need, feel free to rip 5/8" of the stock size, just be sure you are somehow pro-rating it's finsihed strength. LVL = lamintaed veneer lumber (brand names: microlam, ganglam, etc) |
