What size rod do I need so that I might put 5/16 24 threads on it. I'm thinking of using 303 stainless bearing material.

I contacted a friend who make wigets for the Gov't, he is going to make the thing for me. I looke on the internet for info before posting, lots of data if you are tapping a part, not so much if you are using a normal die.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Marky is correct if you are going to use a thread die.

..... but, if you need to do a lot, you may find it wise to use 9/32 or .281" diameter rod and roll the threads. This is a method used to make "all threaded" rod like you see in the rack at the home improvement or hardware store. It is much quicker and very consistant. Kick it back IF you want to know more about this process. Rolling threads displaces the material from the thread grooves onto the crests and is generally done with materal which is the pitch diameter of the chosen thread profile.

Another possible problem is your material. 303 ss is likely to destroy your die unless your sure to get a good quality one.
