What are the two formulae used for calculating the number of turns and fractions of turns of the crank on a dividng head?

I have one so far....

crank turns = 40/N
when N is the desired number of equal divisions at the spindle

Thanks

Welcome aboard,
You need to find an old machinest and get your hands on an older copy of Machinery's Handbook. It will be the last word (best advice) on dividing heads... hardly anyone uses them anymore. Only old machinest will know how to use them...that would be me... but I've forgotten how. It has been many years since I've even seen one. Almost everyone uses a rotory table or does the trig and uses X & Y cords now with digital readouts. I gave away my "OLD" Machinery's Handbook or I would give you a straight answer. You may find one in a liabary.

From the XXth edition...stole it from DiVinci...me and Leo go way back.

tanD = cos(360deg/N) X cotB
sinE = tan(360deg/N) X cotC x sinD

Setting-angle A = D-E

A = Setting Angle for Dividing Head
B = Angle of blank in which teeth will be cut
C = Angle of Fluting Cutter
N = Number of teeth to be cut.

You still need a copy of Machinist Handbook. There are illustrations and other tables.

I would just buy a gear.

Good Luck...May our head be divided and not our country!!..My Tribute to Charlton "Moses" Heston.

Marky,
As I recall, my first MH book was a 6th addition... does that date me? I sure wish I had it. There was a wealth of information there on babbit, gear heads, dividing heads, tool steels, heat treatment, tool sharpening, Landis die heads, .... wow.. all gone now.
